Have you noticed that technology development has made us so needy that we are looking for foldable headphones? The sound quality is no longer the only important thing we are looking for when buying new headphones. Now we expect them to be extremely comfortable, durable but still lightweight and as small as possible. As full-size headphones can’t be really small, they tend to be foldable, so that they can be easily packed in their carrying case/bag and occupy less space. That’s why we have decided to make this article and introduce you to the best foldable headphones on the market and show you how to choose the best model in 2020 for yourself.
What are Foldable Headphones and How They Work?
When we say “foldable headphones”, we usually think of over-ear or on-ear headphones that are generally very large, but they are made to be quite flexible and their size can be reduced up to 50%.
There are many kinds of flexible headphones. Their flexibility sometimes refers to the flexible headband that can be expanded and adjusted to different head sizes, but it mostly refers to the cups. Some of them can swivel or rotate, making the adjusting process easier and the headphones more comfortable. However, foldability relates more to the other type of comfort – to portability.
Full-size headphones are considered to be the best type of headphones mostly because they manage to deliver the most natural and most pleasant sound, but also because they manage to isolate external noise better than other types of headphones (than earbuds, for example). That’s because they have large cups that cover our ears mostly or completely, depending on their size. Those that stand on our ears are called on-ear headphones and they isolate less ambient noise because they don’t cover our ears entirely and great amount of background noise can enter the cups. On the other side, over-ear headphones surround our earlobes isolating them from unwanted sounds.
All of these headphones come with additional weight and significant dimensions. Although the manufacturers are trying to reduce the weight with every new model, the size can be hardly reduced if they want to make full-size headphones. That’s why they have found a way to squeeze large headphones into small carrying cases and make them highly portable and usable on long flights or rides.

Foldable headphones have special hinges/joints on their arms that enable the cups to be turned one over the other or completely pushed under the headband. That means there are two types of foldable headphones and one of them is more foldable than the other. In other words, some of them will occupy less space than the others when they are folded.
Our list of 10 best foldable headphones in 2020 gathers different headphones. Some of them are over-ear, while the others are on-ear headphones. Some of them are completely foldable and their size is cut in half when folded, while the others will occupy less space in your bag, but still more than completely foldable headphones.
The List of 10 Best Foldable Headphones in 2020
Mpow 059 Bluetooth Headphones Over Ear
Mpow 059 are budget wireless headphones that offer more than probably any other headphones in this price range. That is the main reason why they have been so popular for so long. They combine attractive design with good build quality and decent sound. They come in several colors (red, grey, black, pink, blue, green and silver) with glossy finish that looks good, but only for a short period of time as they soon get covered in ugly fingerprints. They can be used as both wireless and wired. The audio cable plug is on the left earcup, while all the controls are placed on the front side of the right earcup. You will find there power on/off button that can be used to play/pause music and answer or end calls, volume controls and controls for skipping tracks. There is also a small built-in mic on the same earcup.
The headphones come with 4ft 3.5mm audio cable, one charging cable, one soft carrying bag and user manual. The bag is not so big as the headphones can be folded and significantly reduced in size, which means that you can take them anywhere you go and they won’t occupy too much space or be too heavy. They weigh 11 ounces and they are very comfortable for wearing and using. The headband can be extended, it is well-padded and the earcups have thick memory foam cushions. The only problem you might encounter is the size of the cups as they are a bit smaller than regular over-ear cups and people with bigger ears might find them small (they might feel as on-ear headphones). However, they feel good and seem very durable, especially because the headband and the hinges are made from stainless steel so they should be quite durable. There were no major complaints about the durability in spite of headphones being mostly plastic.
Mpow 059 have 40mm drivers that deliver very balanced sound. It is not very bassy, but if you’re not addicted to strong bass, you will be very pleased. However, the sound quality gets a bit worse in wireless mode. It is nothing alarming, but we wanted to warn you about that. The mic works nicely, although it might muffle your voice sometimes. The battery is very durable and it can offer up to 13h of playback time, but it has to be charged for 4.5h. The headphones use Bluetooth 4.0 with 33ft signal range and they can isolate up to 10dB of background noise.
Advantages and Disadvantages
Good build quality
Decent and balanced sound
They might lack bass
The mic can muffle your voice
Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Professional Monitor Headphones
ATH-M50x are quite expensive headphones, but if you take into consideration what they offer for the price, you will realize that there are many more expensive headphones that are really not worth their price. M50x are probably the best ATH headphones from M series and generally one of the best under $200. Their original purpose was to be used only as professional headphones, but considering how durable and comfortable they are, many people decided to give the money and enjoy their amazing sound.
These headphones have all-black design. They are not too attractive, but they are professional headphones, so we can’t complain about the looks. They are also very large and the cups cover your ears completely, but they weigh only 10 ounces, which is very good weight for so big headphones. They have nicely padded adjustable headband and thickly padded earcups, so you don’t really have to worry if they are going to be comfortable or not. They may heat your ears a bit, but they won’t cause extreme sweating. The earcups swivel for 90 degrees, but the great thing is that the headphones are completely foldable because that reduces their size up to 50% and makes such a large pair of headphones highly portable.
You don’t have to worry about their durability neither. They are mostly plastic, but the most important parts like headband and hinges are made from metal and they are very thick, which makes the headphones very durable. They come with 3 detachable cables with “twist and lock” mechanism that protects them from sudden pulling out from the port and unwanted damaging. One of the cables is 1.2 to 3m long and it is coiled, while the other two are straight (one is 1.8m and the other 1.2m long). As they have detachable cables, Audio-Technica has enabled their customers to use these headphones as Bluetooth if you get Bluetooth adapter separately. In the package, you will also get one thin carrying bag that comes in handy when you have to pack the headphones in your bag and take them somewhere with you. The only problem you can really have with these headphones is paint peeling off the ear cushions after prolonged wearing.
As far as the sound quality is concerned, we can say that these headphones sound amazing. They have large 45mm drivers that deliver very clear and natural sound. The bass is not too exposed, but you couldn’t really expect that from professional headphones. However, it is very detailed, so if you want to hear how your favorite songs really sound, these are perfect headphones for you. They also have good noise reduction technology, mostly because of the thickness, shape and size of the ear cushions.
Advantages and Disadvantages
Very durable headphones
Ear cushions can be replaced
Detachable audio cables
Amazing detailed, natural and clear sound
No mic or remote controls on the cables
Poor quality of ear cushions
Bose QC 35 Noise Cancelling Headphones
As all Bose products, QC 35 are the synonym for quality and great sound. These headphones cost a lot of money, but they are really amazing and if you have that money, they are worth it.
QC 35 have very elegant design. They are simple but also very attractive headphones. The headphones are available in black and silver colors, but when the looks are considered, we are grateful for the matte finish. They are very large but not bulky and their big cups and ear cushions manage to cover your ears entirely. Although they are advertised as wireless, QC 35 can be used as wired, too. The cable can be plugged into the connector on the left earcup and the headphones can be used even when they run out of battery. The right earcup has all the necessary controls from the power button (also used for pairing) and volume controls to the small built-in mic and micro USB charging port.
The headphones come with 3.8ft 3.5mm straight detachable cable, USB to micro USB charging cable, flight adapter and sturdy case for transporting the headphones safely when traveling, going to work, etc. They have extremely good build quality, so you don’t have to worry that 300-dollar headphones will fall apart. Plastic is the main material used, but it is very durable and the headband is metal. The joints that enable the cups to fold and rotate are very durable, so you can be sure that they will last.
QC 35 are very comfortable headphones, too. Besides being relatively light (10 ounces) and highly portable (they can fold in or fold flat to fit the sturdy case), these headphones have nicely padded headband that can also be extended in order to adjust to different head sizes. The cups are large as well as the cushions, which means almost all kinds of ears can snug in nicely and comfortably. They are covered with leather but they somehow manage to keep your ears cool even during summer.
When it comes to sound quality, we were very satisfied. QC 35 have equalizer that helps to make very balanced sound. There is no too strong bass or too exposed highs, it is perfectly clear and detailed. The headphones use ANC technology, but the bad thing is that it can’t be turned off when used in wireless mode. They also use Bluetooth and NFC technologies and the battery can last up to 20 hours, while it takes 2.5h to fully recharge, which is amazing in comparison to some other models that offer less battery life and longer charging time. The mic is excellent. It rejects ambient noise, allowing you to hear your own voice and making it more natural and clearer to the other person.
Advantages and Disadvantages
Can be used as Bluetooth and wired headphones
NFC and ANC technologies
ANC can’t be turned off when in wireless mode
V-MODA Crossfade M-100 Noise Isolating Metal Headphones
If we had to describe M-100 in one word, it would definitely be the word “unique”. Everything about them is special – from the design to their build quality. When you hear that they are military grade headphones, your first thought is they are inadequate for everyday usage. Well, that is just wrong. These headphones have been made to be used every day and last for a long time.
They have specific design that makes them stand out in the bunch of other headphones. That is exactly what makes them so attractive. They are available in black, silver and grey colors, but the manufacturer can engrave anything you want on the front side of the cups. M-100 are wired headphones, but they have mic on the audio cable and they are foldable, which makes them excellent for everyday casual usage.
M-100 come with two detachable cables with 3.5mm connector. One of them has mic and the control pad, while the other doesn’t have anything. There are also 6.3mm plug adapter, one sturdy carrying case for transporting the headphones and 2 corks that you can use to seal the plug on one of the earcups as the cable can be inserted into any of the cups and easily replaced if damaged. The ear cushions can also be replaced, which is great as many people complain about them being too small for their ears. However, you can always take the original ones off and get separately some bigger and more comfortable cushions for a few bucks.
These headphones are quite comfortable in spite of their metal build. They weigh 9.8 ounces and their headband can be extended, while the earcups can swivel, which makes them more adjustable to anybody’s head. They have proven to be extremely durable. They were tested and the results showed that you can drop them up to 70 times and they will still be able to work normally. The only negative side is the plastic that connects the hinges and the headband as it can crack sometimes. However, the hinges are metal and durable, so there shouldn’t be problems with repeated folding and unfolding. Because of the ability to fold in, their size can be reduced up to 50% and they can become very portable.
When it comes to sound quality, they sound great. Their large 50mm drivers deliver powerful, bassy and clear sound. It is also very detailed and distinctive. They have decent noise reduction technology, although they do leak sound.
Advantages and Disadvantages
Great sound quality
Ear cushions might be uncomfortable for some users
They leak sound
Skullcandy Crusher Headphones with Built-in Amplifier and Mic
Skullcandy Crusher are one of the most popular Skullcandy products. That company really pays attention to every detail when design is considered. The headphones come in even 15 different colors and designs. There is practically no chance that you can’t find something that you like. These headphones are made for urban bass heads and their looks confirm that.
Skullcandy Crusher come with straight 3.5mm audio cable, one carrying bag and one AA battery. The cable has small control pad with the inline mic and control button with Skullcandy logo. The cups are square-shaped and they have very thick ear cushions that seal nicely around your ears and manage to isolate passively great amount of external noise. The arms are flexible and movable, so that the earcups can be folded in, although only partially. You won’t reduce their size in half, but it would definitely help to make more space in your bag for other accessories. The headband is nicely padded. It would be better if the padding wasn’t made from bumps, but it is very comfortable and its size can be adjusted to the size and shape of your head.
Skullcandy Crusher are plastic headphones, but customers rarely complain about their durability. They feel strong and considering the price, they work just fine. The plastic is strong and to prove that, we have to say that they weigh even 10.1 ounces. It is not recommended to constantly fold and unfold them, but every once and then won’t destroy them. Their biggest construction problem is the AA battery that goes into the left earcup. It is probably quite loosened and that causes shaking sound that can be heard whenever you move, but you don’t listen to loud music.
However, these headphones are made to be used for listening to music with strong bass and that’s the reason why the bass button is located on the earcup and why the special battery is inserted to boost it. The headphones can work without the battery, but the sound will be flat and uninteresting. When the battery is inserted and the bass turned on, you can enjoy loud and powerful bass for up to 40 hours because that’s how long the battery will last. In fact, the battery is there to support normal work of one of the two drivers, Sensation 55 (the other one is REX40) that is responsible for delivering bassy sound.
Advantages and Disadvantages
Very interesting and unique design
Comfortable headphones with thick ear pads
Good mic great for answering call on the go
Shaking sound in the left earcup caused by AA battery
Bose QuietComfort 25 Acoustic Noise Cancelling Headphones
QC 25 are really amazing headphones, but we couldn’t expect less from Bose. They have elegant design and they are available in grey/black, white/beige and all black versions with nice matte finish. They are wired, but that shouldn’t be a deal breaker for so comfortable, durable headphones with amazing sound quality. On the cups, you will find only cable plug and one button used for activating acoustic noise cancelling. All the other controls and the mic are placed on the control pad on the cable. The only problem you can have with these headphones is the L-shaped jack that sometimes gets damaged, so be very careful with it.
QC 25 come with sturdy protective case, car adapter, one AAA battery and user manual. They are mostly plastic, but they seem well-built and there were no more important issues with build quality so far. They are also extremely comfortable and light (6.9 ounces), and you can wear them for hours without feeling headache or pressure. That’s mostly because these headphones are very adjustable and they can fit most customers in spite of different ear and head shape/size. QC 25 are very flexible. They have well-padded, soft and adjustable headband. On the other hand, the cups can swivel, rotate and fold in, and that makes them not only comfortable but also highly portable as their size can be reduced to fit into their carrying case.
As far as the sound quality is concerned, we were amazed by clear, crisp and balanced sound that their drivers deliver. Bass heads wouldn’t be so amazed, but we think it is great to have headphones with such a detailed and clear sound. The headphones also use noise cancellation technology, but to activate it, you will need that AAA battery and that one button on the right earcup. After 35h or so, the battery will drain out, but you will still be able to listen to music, although only passively. That means that the sound won’t be so loud and that it will get a bit muddy, but nothing alarming really.
Advantages and Disadvantages
Amazing natural, clear and detailed sound
Acoustic noise cancellation technology
Very comfortable and adjustable
Lightweight and highly portable
The sound changes when NC is turned off
Problems with connector build quality
Beats Solo3 Wireless On-Ear Headphones
Beats Solo3 are the improved version of Beats Solo2, the wireless version. They have maintained the same design, only without the wires. Solo3 are still on-ear headphones, with slightly bigger earcups than their predecessor, and they are still available in many attractive colors (14 of them) with glossy or matte finish. On the left earcup, you will find 3,5mm plug for audio cable (which is there just in case you run out of battery) and big multifunctional button with Beats logo on it. On the other earcup, there are one small button used for pairing and LED battery status indicators.
These headphones come with 3.5mm audio cable with mic and remote controls, USB charging cable, warranty card, user manual and one nice carrying case. Beats Solo3 are plastic headphones and although the plastic is very durable, they are still more fragile than metal headphones. They are probably not the most comfortable headphones on the market, but they come with soft padded headband that can be extended and adjusted to the size of your head. The earcups are slightly movable, which means they can adjust easily to your ears. They also have rich cushioning, so you don’t have to worry if these are going to put pressure on your head and ears. They are also foldable and the joints are well-built, so they should be quite resistant to breaking and damaging.
Beats cooperates with Apple, which means more quality, but also less privileges for Android users. They will still work with Android phones, but the pairing process will last longer and some cool features can’t be used as they are reserved only for Apple products. However, sound quality remains the same no matter how you use them. They use powerful battery that can last up to 40h and their signal range is approximately 30ft. In addition, Solo3 support fast charging technology, which means they can provide you with up to 3h of battery life after only 5 minutes of charging. They still have extremely exposed bass that overwhelms highs and lows, especially vocals that might get a bit distorted at high volume. Anyway, many people apparently love that kind of sound, so we think they will be satisfied with one more Beats model.
Advantages and Disadvantages
Attractive design / available in many colors
Quite light (7.5 ounces)
/ Beats cooperates with Apple
Completely plastic headphones
Vocals get distorted at high volumes
Many bad copies are available on the market
Sony MDRZX110 ZX Series Stereo Headphones
Sony MDRZX110 are the cheapest headphones on our list. However, we will show you that cheap doesn’t have to mean bad, especially when some product is signed by Sony. They can be bought with or without mic, but you will have to pay extra 3 dollars if you want to have control pad and mic on the Y-shaped audio cable. Anyway, no matter whether you spend a few bucks more or less, whether you choose black or white color, these headphones are worth every penny.
They have better design than many expensive headphones and they are on-ear headphones. They are extremely lightweight (4.16 ounces) and very thin, so you shouldn’t have any problems with prolonged wearing. The only problem can cause the headband because it is not padded at all and the plastic might hut the top of your head, especially if you are bold. However, customers usually don’t complain about that. The cups are padded and there could be more cushioning definitely, but they are comfortable enough the way they are. The headband can be extended and the cups fold in and fold flat, reducing their size in half, which makes them very portable.
The negative side is that you don’t get any carrying bag in the package, in fact, nothing but the headphones and user manual, but you couldn’t expect more from so cheap headphones. The plastic they were made from is very durable, there were no major problems with headphones falling apart, and you can be sure that the joints will survive normal usage. The cushioning makes bigger problems as it starts to peel off after some time, but the headphones will still continue to work normally. The cable is quite durable, and it has L-shaped 3.5mm connector. The lower part of the cable is rounded, while the two upper ends that are connected to the cups are flat, which makes the cable tangle free.
When it comes to sound quality, they sound better than other headphones in this category, but that’s why Sony is so popular and manages to preserve so long tradition. The low frequencies seem to be a bit more emphasized than the mids and the highs, but the sound is in general quite flat and quite clear. It is nothing mind-blowing, but it is better than the sound of average headphones in the price range.
Advantages and Disadvantages
Quite durable for the price
Good sound quality
The paint on ear cushions can start to peel off
No padding on the headband
Bluedio T2s Bluetooth Headphones On Ear with Mic
Bluedio T2s (also called Bluedio Turbine) are budget on-ear headphones with very energetic sound. They don’t have very elegant design, but they are very interesting and different from the others, mostly because of the angled earcups and the folding mechanism. They are available in black, white, red and blue colors and they look nice in all those versions. On the front side, you will see Bluedio logo in a circle that looks like a watch. On the left earcup, you will find only 3.5mm plug for audio cable, while all the controls are on the right side. There are multifunctional button, volume controls, track controls as well as micro USB charging port.
T2s are quite large for on-ear headphones, but that may be the reason why they are so comfortable and lay nicely on ears. The headband is nicely padded, it can be extended and adjusted to the size of your head, while the earcups can be rotated up to 195 degrees, but you can’t swivel them. The padding on the cups is soft and made from foam. It lays nicely on ears, although it can become a bit flat after some time. However, the headphones are comfortable enough for wearing even for several hours straight. They also fold nicely and reduce their size practically in half, which makes them very portable. In addition, they weigh only 7.7 ounces, so you really shouldn’t have major problems in comfort department.
Bluedio Turbine come in a simple cardboard box with USB charging cable, 3.5mm audio cable that you can use in case you run out of battery and one user manual. It is actually quite difficult to run out of battery, considering the fact that it can last up to 40 hours. Anyway, audio cable can always come in handy. The only problem is that the mic won’t work if the headphones are used in wired mode.
When it comes to build quality, we are very satisfied. The headphones are plastic, but they feel stable and reliable, especially the joints that are necessary for folding in and out. Customers had more problems with the headband than the joints. Besides that, T2s have great sound quality for 30-dollar headphones, especially if you are bass head. The truth is the bass is so powerful that it overwhelms the mids and the highs, but many people love exactly that kind of sound and it can be really amazing when you play electronic music.
Advantages and Disadvantages
Interesting angled design
Good sound quality of you love bass
Decent build quality for the price
Very light and comfortable
Ear cushions can wear out and become thinner
Bass overwhelms mids and highs
Not great for listening to other kinds of music besides electronic
Sound Intone CX-05 Noise Isolating Headphones with Microphone
Sound Intone CX-05 are budget on-ear headphones that look and feel better than they sound. However, they can be really good choice depending on preferences.
CX-05 have interesting design and we can tell that the manufacturer was paying attention to details (braided headband, for example). When you look at the price, you would think that you’re buying plastic cheap headphones, but CX-05 surprise us with their metal headband and hinges. They are wired headphones and there are no controls on the headphones themselves. In the package, you will get two braided cables (one with and the other without the mic), but they look rather durable, so we think there will be no need to buy them separately if one of them gets damaged.
The headphones are relatively light for headphones with metal parts (they weigh less than 10 ounces). They have adjustable and flexible headband and folding earcups. The headband is nicely padded, although some more padding wouldn’t hurt. The same situation is with the ear cushions. However, they adjust nicely to the size and shape of user’s head and ears. The fact that you can completely fold them in makes them highly portable, in spite of the fact that they don’t come with carrying case or bag at least.
CX-05 are quite durable headphones, all the way from the headband and those metal hinges to the nice braided cables that are supposed to last longer than plastic ones. Besides being good-looking and quite comfortable, these headphones have only one big flaw and that is, sadly, the way they sound. The sound is quite flat, but lower frequencies are still more emphasized than mids or highs. It seems that the sound gets worse at high frequencies. We can’t say they are terrible, but a bit disappointing. However, if you’re not a needy customer, we are sure these headphones have a lot to offer, especially for the price.
Advantages and Disadvantages
More than affordable price
Very portable because of the weight and foldability
Sound quality should be improved
More padding should be added to the headband and earcups
Positive and Negative Aspects of Purchasing Foldable Headphones
As all the products that we use everyday and just like all the other headphones, foldable headphones have their downsides along with numerous advantages. They make some activities much easier, but they also come with some issues. That’s why we are listing all their bad and good sides, so that you can be aware of all the good and bad things that come with having a pair of these.
Foldable headphones are easy to carry around
As we have said, their size can be reduced up to 50% thanks to their movable joints. It is enough to put one cup over another or push the cups towards the headband and the headphones are ready to go. They usually come with a carrying bag or, if you are lucky, a carrying case. You put them in there and they will be protected in your bag, suitcase or trunk no matter where you go. You can even take them with you when boarding a plane or going to work, which means you can use them anytime you want.
Foldable headphones save you some space even at your home
They are not practical only for travelling, they are also adequate for small rooms packed with all kinds of devices and equipment at your home. If you have bunch of different devices and gadgets that you use every day on your desk, foldable headphones can save you some space that can be used to store some other important things.
Foldable headphones are being improved constantly
These headphones are not just an expensive dream anymore and if you want to buy foldable headphones, that doesn’t mean you have to give up comfort or great sound. They are available as branded expensive headphones as well as affordable headphones that will still enable you to enjoy all the privileges of good pair of headphones. For example, they can be both foldable and noise cancelling, foldable and bassy, etc. They also come as both wired and wireless, but you also get to choose between over-ear and on-ear models. You just have to decide what are the most important features that your headphones should have.
The main downside of these headphones is vulnerability of their hinges (the parts that enable the headphones to fold and unfold). As all movable parts, those hinges get damaged, especially if you fold and unfold your headphones a lot and don’t pay attention to their maintenance and the way you fold them. However, you can prolong their life a lot if you take just a little bit better care of them. You should avoid folding whenever it is possible and try not to make sudden moves when doing it. Try being as gentle as possible with your headphones and if they have metal arms and joints, keep them far from water that might cause rusting.
How to Choose the Best Model?
Our list contains only 10 models of foldable headphones that we consider the best models on the market. You can find many other models with different characteristics on the market. You don’t have to buy one of the models from this list. You can find something else that may fit your needs better, but you have to know what are the most important features and characteristics of good foldable headphones. That’s why we have decided to give you some advice that may help you pick the best headphones for your needs.
- Set the price range
In our opinion, this should be the first step before you start your search. That way, you save your time and make the search more easier and stress free. Luckily, great foldable headphones are available at many different prices. No matter how much money you want to spend on your new pair of headphones, you should be able to find the right pair easily.
- Define the purpose
Before buying something, you should know what do you need it for. For example, if you are going to use your headphones in crowded places, you should buy the model that is not only foldable, but also features some kind of noise cancelling technology as those headphones should be portable and isolate background noise well. Also, if you are going to wear headphones for many hours, try to find comfortable ones that won’t hurt your ears or head.
- Pay attention to build quality
It is really important that foldable headphones are made from durable materials so that the hinges can survive repeated movements that wear them out. It would be the best if you could get headphones with metal hinges, but if you can’t, try buying those with hinges made from very durable plastic.
- Consider other features
Don’t forget to consider what other features your headphones should have. Their main purpose is listening to audio content, so they should be able to offer at least decent sound quality. In addition, depending on your needs and preferences, you should decide if you want wired or wireless headphones, if they should have ANC or noise reduction, if they should be on-ear or over-ear.

Our list presented to you 10 best models of foldable headphones in 2020 in different price ranges and with different features.
